If you’re ever thinking of having a multiple bet on the horses, can we recommend you eschew the traditional three and four-fold and instead consider the ‘Lucky’ series of wagers?

It is this bet type, and often the Lucky 31, that creates huge wins for punters, and that was certainly the case last week when the fantastically-named Peter Titman, who always likes to keep abreast of the latest racing news, won in excess of £50,000 on the Dante meeting at York.

He picked out five winners at combined odds in excess of 20,000/1, with Betfred enhancing his win by a further 50% for picking the winners of the quintet of featured races.

Titman’s Treasure Chest

Thursday May 17 got off to the perfect start for Peter: a quiet pint in his favourite York pub, with fish, chips and mushy peas also on the menu. He grabbed a copy of the Racing Post and got to work….

El Astronaute got his Lucky 31 off to the best possible start with victory in the Betfred Handicap at a mark of 15/2.

Roaring Lion, the 3/1 favourite, looked in fine fettle in the Dante Stakes and was a comfortable winner; suddenly, Peter’s hopes of a big windfall were improving.

Afaak (9/2) and Main Desire (12/1) followed in the Hambleton Handicap and EBF Weston Stakes respectively, the trouser-shredding anticipation reached fever pitch: Titman was one win away from a huge payout.

He had to wait until the 17:35, the Investec Wealth Handicap, for his destiny to unfold. Waiting for Richie, his selection, tracked the leaders from the get-go, and when Denmead was obstructed with a furlong to go the 7/1 shot seized his moment. He finished first to complete the full sweep for Peter, who celebrated in his local after trousering the bounty. Titman now plans to buy a new laptop and purchase a holiday home in Lanzarote!

So what exactly is a Lucky 31 bet? Who better to explain than the man himself….

“I really concentrated on my selections which I placed with Betfred at the race course. when my fifth horse won which meant I had got five singles, ten doubles, ten trebles, five four-folds and an accumulator winning £58,336, including the Betfred bonus, from a total £31 stake.”

And that’s the key to it, really: when you place a Lucky 15, 31 or 63, you are placing an accumulator but not all of your selections have to win. If they do, then happy days!

So pick out five horses for your Lucky 31, and then place your bet; remember, your total wager amount will be 31x your stake, so £1 x 31 selections equals £31.

Your possible winning combinations include a single (if one horse wins), a double if two win, three doubles and a treble if a trio of your picks triumph, and so on. The odds are accumulative of course, and so if three or more of your horses do triumph you are set to be quids in.

Land all five and, well, like Titman, you could be rolling in it!
